The icon of the Most Holy Theotocos “of Three Hands” is made of hand-forged brass.
The first icon of the Three Hands is from the 7th century, when by the prayers of the Most Holy Theotocos, the severed right hand, by the iconoclasts, of St.John of Damascus was miraculously healed. As a sign of gratitude, St. John gave a silver hand to be made and placed on the icon itself.
The icon of the Most Holy Theotocos, with a silver shackle on her hands, and an added silver shackle of one other hand – in memory of the miracle, according to which the engraving of the medallion was made, is part of the treasury of the Monastery of the Dormition of the Most Theotocos  – Matka.
